Yes, Lisbon has plenty of courses for English speakers, and most of them never switch into Portuguese. You can study a language, learn to surf, take a ceramics or cooking workshop, sit a yoga or breathwork teacher training, join a tech or design bootcamp, or take a personal development certification such as NLP, all taught in English from the first minute to the certificate. A course “for English speakers” in Lisbon means three things: the teaching is in English, the handouts are in English, and nobody expects you to speak Portuguese to keep up.
The reason there is so much choice is simple. Portugal has one of the strongest levels of English in Europe, and EF’s English Proficiency Index has placed the country in its top proficiency band year after year. Add a large international community in the city and courses designed for visitors stop being a niche and become normal.

Which courses in Lisbon are actually taught in English?
More than you would expect, because the city’s course market was built around people who arrive from somewhere else. Universities such as NOVA and Católica run English taught programmes and summer schools. The surf schools along the Costa da Caparica and up towards Ericeira teach in English by default, since most of their students are visitors. Cooking and ceramics studios in Alfama, Príncipe Real and Marvila advertise their workshops in English first.
The category that surprises people is personal development. Coaching certifications, trauma informed bodywork trainings, breathwork facilitator programmes and NLP trainings all run here in English, partly because Lisbon is cheap to fly into from most of Europe and pleasant to be in for a week. Where you have to look twice is anything aimed mainly at the local market: municipal sports courses, most vocational training, driving schools, and public health programmes. Those run in Portuguese, sometimes with a friendly teacher translating on the fly, which is not the same as a course in English.
How do you check a course is genuinely in English?
Ask one question: what language will the other participants speak to each other in during the exercises? A course can be advertised in English, taught by a fluent trainer, and still leave you outside the conversation if twelve of the fifteen people in the room are Portuguese and pair up in Portuguese during practice.
That question matters most in formats where you practise on each other rather than listen: coaching, NLP, therapy adjacent trainings, language courses, acting and improv. It matters much less in a pottery class, where you mostly need to see the hands.
- Is the teaching, the material and the certificate all in English?
- What nationalities were in the last two groups?
- How big is the group, and how much of the time is practice rather than lecture?
- Who issues the certificate, and can that body be checked independently?
- What is the full price, including materials, certificate and any second module?
A school that answers all five in a couple of sentences is usually a school that has thought about the experience. What does a course week in Lisbon really cost?
The course fee is rarely the biggest number. Flights, seven nights of accommodation, food, transport and the working days you give up usually add up to more than the tuition for anything shorter than a month. That is worth knowing before you compare two prices that look far apart, because the cheaper course in a harder to reach city often ends up costing more.
Prices in Lisbon vary too much by category to quote a useful range, so ask for the full figure in writing instead. Two things to pin down: whether the certificate is included or billed separately, and whether the advertised price covers the whole qualification or only the first of several modules. Split module pricing is common in coaching and yoga trainings and is where most unpleasant surprises live.
Is Lisbon a good place to take a course at all?
For anything where the point is to leave your routine behind, yes. Distance from home does real work: you cannot answer a quick email between exercises when the office is in another country, and the evening after a hard training day is easier to process by the river than on a commuter train. The honest counterweight: Lisbon in August is hot and crowded, and a full time intensive in a room without decent air conditioning is punishing. Late spring and autumn are better. And if your course is purely technical, something you could equally do online at home, flying here mainly buys you the location, not the learning.
Short workshop or full certification?
Pick a short workshop when you want the experience, and a certification when you want to work with what you learn afterwards. The dividing line is not quality, it is what happens on the Monday after.

If the certification route is the one that interests you, check who stands behind the certificate before anything else. In coaching and NLP, anyone may print one. What I notice about people who come here to study
Groups in Lisbon are mixed by default. In a room of ten you will often hear six or seven native languages, and everybody is working in English, which is a second language for most of them. That does something useful: people slow down, choose words more carefully, and stop hiding behind fluent chatter. In a training built on precise language, that is an advantage rather than a handicap. The other pattern is simpler. People who fly in are already committed, because they bought a flight, and committed groups learn faster than convenient ones.

How do I know a certificate from a Lisbon course is worth anything?
Look past the school and at the issuing body. Ask which organisation certifies the training, whether that organisation lists its licensed trainers publicly, and whether your name will appear in a register you can point clients to. If a school cannot name a body beyond itself, the certificate is a receipt rather than a qualification.
Are English language courses in Lisbon more expensive than online options?
Usually yes, once travel and accommodation are counted. The trade is depth for cost: live practice in a small group, feedback in real time, and a week away from your normal routine. For skills you learn by reading or watching, online is the better value. For skills you learn by doing them on another human being, the room is worth paying for.
Can I work while taking a course in Lisbon?
Around a part time evening course, yes. Around a full time intensive, plan not to. Trying to run your inbox during breaks is the most reliable way to get half the value from a week you paid full price for.
